What is Arjun ?

Arjuna, which is also known as Veervriksha or Kakubh in Sanskrit, is one of the popular medicines of Ayurveda. Arjuna is mostly used in heart related diseases. But there are many other important uses of Arjuna about which people are still unaware. Although Arjuna is known as a very good medicine for heart disease. But in the texts of Ayurveda, the use of Arjuna has been mentioned in many diseases like respiratory diseases, fracture, urticaria, obesity.

An attempt has been made in this article to uncover these mysterious secrets of Arjuna.

 

How to Identify Arjun?

The botanical name of Arjun is Terminalia Arjuna and it is a member of the Combretaceae family. Its tree is found in rows on the banks of rivers and streams in almost all regions. Its trees can be 60 to 80 feet tall. Its bark is white from outside and red from inside. Due to the white outer bark, it is also known as Dhawal Vriksha in Ayurveda. Its leaves are very similar to guava leaves. It flowers in the summer season and its fruits start ripening by the spring season. Its fruits are similar to those of Amrakh but are slightly smaller in size.

Ayurvedic properties of Arjun:

In Ayurveda, Arjun is considered to be a pacifier of Kapha and Pitta doshas. This is due to its kashay rasa, Laghu, Ruksha Guna, and sheet veerya.

Uses of Arjuna:

Although the use of Arjuna bark powder and Arjunarishta is more popular among the general public, but apart from this, many important uses of Arjuna are described in the scriptures.

Use of Arjuna in obesity:

Patients who are overweight or whose cholesterol remains uncontrolled can be given Arjuna decoction or Arjuna bark powder. Decoction of Arjuna’s fresh bark or its powder can be made by using the decoction method described in the scriptures of Ayurveda. Arjuna decoction in unbalanced quantity causes nausea or vomiting, hence its quantity should be determined according to the age, prakriti and satva of the patient.

Arjuna bark can also be dried and its powder can be given to such patients. Along with this, honey or anupaan should be used as per the doctor’s advice.

Use of Arjuna in Fracture:

Chakradatta has advised to use Arjuna powder mixed with Harjod, Lakh powder, roasted wheat powder and mishree for patients of fracture. Ghee is mixed in this powder and given in quantity according to the condition of the patient and milk is given as an anupaan along with it, which helps in timely healing of fracture.

Use of Arjuna in patients of respiratory diseases:

If such patients who are suffering from tuberculosis, which is known as Rajayakshma in Ayurveda, are given equal parts of powders of Ashwagandha, Nagbala, Pushkarmool, Haritaki, Guduchi and Arjuna along with other medicines, along with Talisaadi powder mixed in equal parts and unequal parts of honey and ghee as anupaan, then it proves to be an excellent Balya medicine. Its use as a Balya Yoga has been found to be very beneficial in patients of Rajayakshma.

Use of Arjuna in Urticaria:

Although Arjuna is mostly used in patients of heart disease and obesity, but the interesting thing is that Acharya Charak has described Arjuna in Udard Prashamana Mahakashaya and not in Hridaya Mahakashaya. Keeping this in mind, Arjuna powder was used in patients of urticaria in the amount according to age with the addition of honey. The results of which were very encouraging. Therefore, by using Arjuna powder along with Haridra Khand, the desired benefits can be obtained in patients of urticaria.
