Classification of Nasya

Navana nasya:

The procedure of applying sneha in nostrils is named as navana.
Avapid masya:

The nasya in which shrita, shita, svarasa or juice of kalka is instilled into the nostril. This done by squeezing a  cotton swab or cloth impregnated in that medicine.
Dhmapana (pradhamana) nasya:

The nasya in which powder medicine is blown into the nostril of the patient by the mouth of physician using a pipe is dhmapana.

What is Pratimarsha and Marsha

Pratimarsha: It is a type of sneha nasya which is given into the nostril in very small amount (1-2 drops).
Marsha nasya: Sneha in higher amount than pratimarsha is used here.
Brimhana nasya: Basically it is sneha nasya which nourishes the area as well as body. It is named so considering the action of sneha. It is made of sneha or madhura substances.
Karshana nasya: It is opposite to brimhana nasya and made of ruksha and katu materials.
Snehana nasya: It is same as brimhana nasya.

Some Other Classifications:

Shodhana nasya: The nasya which is used to eliminate the dosha from urdhva jat is shodhana nasya, Its function is as like as vanana or virechana acisto body.
Rechana or virechana nasya: It is same as shodhana nasya. It is made of katha and svarasa of tikshma drug, honey, asava or sneha prepared with appropriate drugs.
Shamana nasya: This type of nasya is used for pacification of dosha or disease. It does not have elimination property.

What is Nasya Karma

Nasya Karma[1] is an important part of Panchkarma. It is considered as best procedure for diseases above clavicle bone. It is also very significant for preventive purpose.

Basically nasya karma is administration of medicine through nasal route. It is clear from the description of nasya karma that Acharyas of ayurved knew about the role of nasal mucosa in drug absorption and drug distribution.

Even they were aware about the role of nasal passage in transmission of disease and thus they advised pratidarsh nasya as a daily procedure to lubricate the nasal mucosa as well as to create a barrier for entry of agent and to stop spread of disease through droplet and droplet nuclei transmission.

NASYA KARMA(नस्य कर्म) :-परिभाषा

It is the procedure in which medicaments are administered through nostrils. Nasya karma[2] is a therapeutic measure, in which the drug aministered through nose that eliminates vitiated dosha situated in head. This procedure  is also named as shirovirechana, shirovireka, navana, nastah karma, nastah prachchhhardan, etc. in the classics.

Nasya is a very important therapeutic procedure as it has some unique characteristics not available in other procedures. It is the best method to eliminate and alleviate the vitiated doshas of urdhvanga.

It is the only shodhana procedure that directly influences indriyas. Though administered through nostril, it can act immediately on the distal body parts by means of systemic absorption
Bhoja has classified nasya into two types i.e. prayogika and snaihika. Videha has mentioned two types of nasya i.e. samjnaprabhodhaka and stambhana.
